Stoking regionalism in India

What would it take for an upset of Mumbai by UP in the Ranji Trophy to generate the same amount of hoopla as LSU's upset of Duke?

Packing international matches might help too. The biggest unit the fans root for would then be their region and not their country.

nice try: TV coverage is tricky. As you said, Ranji Trophy cannot become popular unless matches are covered on TV. But, sports channels will not buy rights to telecast Ranji Trophy until they can find sponsors, who in turn will pitch in only when they are assured of enough viewers. What is needed is for some channel to be altruistic and buy the telecast rights just to promote the game, e.g., ESPN's promotion of the Indian National Football League a few years back. Also, the new BCCI board has plans of launching their own channel. That would be just perfect I guess as they won't have any other content to offer when international matches are not on.

Sumit and yhac: The NCAA and NBA have completely distinct sets of players, and I think both enjoy equal popularity. Why can't we achieve the same in cricket?
