Everything dull all round ...
There really isn't anything important going on in sports right now. The tri-series on in Sri Lanka lacks any appeal because a lacklustre Windies outfit has reduced two-thirds of the clashes to no-contests. There is still one month to go for the US Open to begin (yes, the one in tennis; the one in golf is already done with for this year). The regular season is still dragging on in baseball (why the hell do they play so many games?!). OK, the World Championships are on in swimming, but there really isn't anything much happening out there that would inspire anyone ...
The only way of dispelling this ennui seems to be by reading the petty stories conjured up the media. The best I have read today is this. The reporter has painted a complete picture of the Indian team's psychology based on how they sat at a table for a meal! The other interesting bit that I read today is Prem Panicker's post summarizing Ashes coverage in the press. As Panicker points out, I too can't believe how Ian Bell can openly state that he has no clue about Warne's bowling when there are 4 more tests left to play in series! He even claims that the ball with which Warne dismissed him was not a slider, but just a faster legbreak that did not spin enough. Dude, atleast don't openly admit in the press that you are clueless! Anyway, with the second Test scheduled to begin on Thursday, we can be sure that the Ashes hype will once again reach sky-high over the next couple of days. If nothing, this will atleast throw up enough interesting articles to pass time with.
If any of you have read any interesting sports article of late which has made you feel the reporter must be crazy, please do post a link out here. :)
Cheers,
Harsha

Ok here's something that should get us thining....
From this article
Actually, three months ago, even the International Cricket Council ignored Sourav for the forthcoming Super Series in Australia.
That didn’t surprise as one of the six selectors, Clive Lloyd, had lost face on the ban issue last November and definitely wouldn’t have advocated the cause of somebody who embarrassed him.
oh boy! when will the telegraph ever write something sensible with regard to saurav!....*sigh!*
ok then back to good old boredom ...Yawn!
Karthik, the link you pointed to has been truncated. Can you please re-post the link?
Thanks!
oops.. Here is the link
Its the one where he complained on his non-selection to the Asia XI (!!) . ..a product of LP Sahi school of ganguly journalism :)...
ROFL!!! :))
I wonder who gives these guys "inside info" on what actually transpired behind closed doors. Most articles (not necessarily on sports) cite a source who requested to be anonymous. I always wonder if they do indeed have a source!
The article is stupid. But, it's not far away from the truth. The selection panel might have not looked at the records but instead their opinions on certain players to include or exclude them. BTW, her's Bhajji's comment regarding his exclusion
“Yeh selection mere samajh mein nahin aya... Dada (Sourav) bhi nahin hain! Zaheer Khan ko bhi nahin liye... Kya criteria raha?”
Zaheer Khan?? This tells what the team thinks of Zaheer. These guys never ever look at their own records.
Leave alone people inside the team, there are outsiders too, like Ranatunga, who still believe in Zaheer and Nehra. Quoting from his recent column:
These three (Pathan, Zaheer and Nehra) were terrific and could form one of the most potent bowling attacks in the next World Cup.
We all remember how well Zaheer bowled in the final of the previous World Cup!
This news item has some very thrilling news.....
Our football team is going to play at Ba, Lautoka and Suva later this month!! Is that exciting or what!!!
And you say things are dull?? :p :p
I don't think this is the main Indian football team - there isn't a single player I have heard of. OK, I agree that the last time I read any article on Indian football was a couple of years back. But, I doubt all of them would have retired within the span of a 2 years!
Anyway, I did not know the name of any city in Fiji before this :)
if you thought football is dead....check out www.indianfootball.com
i fell off my chair on seeing this site!
A quick check tells me this is indeed the main senior team!! ( Check the national team section of above site )
And you seriously dont know any of these guys?? Boy! you are ignorant!! And so am i ... i too thought this was some kind of junior squad!
If your idea of players are the vijayans , the jo paul ancheris then my friend, i am sorry to inform you that they have long retired :)
Wow! It is indeed the senior team. I certainly expected Vijayan and Ancheri to have retired, but I thought atleast some of the other players would have remained. I don't remember the names of any of them off the top of my head, but they would certainly ring a bell if mentioned to me again. And, none of the names in the current team stir up any memories.
Sania Mirza is doing ok in the WTA events. Her ranking has risen to 59 and she is already in the 2nd round of the Acura Classic and will meet Nadia Petrova. I think her dream of being inside the top 50 before the season gets over should come true.
Yes, winning a round or two at the US Open should ensure that she makes the top 50. She has basically garnered so many points this year since she had won hardly any matches on the WTA Tour previously! What will be more interesting is how many more points she gains next year compared to this year.
However, I am pretty surprised by the lack of depth in the women's game. All that Sania did was win a round or two in several tournaments and she is all set to make it into the top 50! I guess making the transition from the Challenger circuit to the WTA Tour is in itself a big step.
Hi... this is the first time I am visiting your blog... anyways, here is an articlethat is a little interesting and has appeared in the local papers in Australia
Nirav, thanks for dropping by. This news bit has appeared pretty much everywhere now, over the course of the day. And, there have been claims on other blogs that the Aussies themselves are prone to throwing the ball back to the keeper within striking range of the batsmen. Nothing in my memory throws up any unpleasant incident because of this though.
